About Marcus Sasser
Sasser is an American guard who entered the NBA as a 2023 first-round pick and was traded to the Detroit Pistons after draft-night transactions involving Memphis and Boston. A scoring guard with deep shooting range and clutch shot-making ability, he has contributed as a rotation player in Detroit while adjusting to the professional pace and physicality.
Born Marcus Jerome Sasser Jr. on September 21, 2000, in Red Oak, Texas, he played for Red Oak High School under the coaching of his uncle, Jason. He was named District 14-5A MVP and Class 5A All-State as a senior. He committed to Houston over Colorado State, SMU, and UTEP.
At Houston, Sasser joined the starting lineup in the second half of his freshman season. On February 15, 2020, he scored a season-high 26 points in an overtime loss to SMU. As a freshman, he averaged 8.1 points and shot 35.2 percent from three-point range, earning AAC All-Freshman Team honors. As a sophomore, he averaged 13.7 points and 2.6 rebounds and helped Houston reach the Final Four of the 2021 NCAA tournament. He was named Second Team All-AAC. On December 24, 2021, a toe injury ended his junior season prematurely; at the time, he led the team with 17.7 points per game.
Sasser was selected 25th overall by the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2023 NBA draft. On draft night, he was involved in a three-team trade that sent him to Boston in exchange for Marcus Smart, then immediately to Detroit for James Nnaji and draft picks. The trade was finalized on June 28, 2023.
Sasser made his NBA debut on October 25, 2023, scoring 8 points in a one-point loss to Miami. As a rookie, he played 71 games and averaged 8.3 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 3.3 assists in 19 minutes per game. In his second season, his playing time decreased to 14.2 minutes per game, and his averages dipped to 6.6 points, 1.2 rebounds, and 2.3 assists. The Pistons improved by 30 wins and reached the playoffs, though Sasser did not see action in the first-round series against New York.
Sasser is a score-first guard with deep three-point range and a willingness to shoot off the dribble. He operates comfortably in pick-and-roll situations and can generate offense in isolation. Defensively, he uses active hands and positioning to generate steals. His size and playmaking are areas of continued development as he adjusts to NBA rotations.
Sasser's father, Marcus Sr., played at Frank Phillips College. His uncles, Jeryl and Jason, were All-American college players who reached the NBA. His great-grandfather, John Barber, also played in the NBA.
