Ausar Thompson

Thompson is a young NBA guard with elite defensive credentials and a decorated pre-professional résumé. Selected fifth overall in 2023 by the Detroit Pistons, he developed through Overtime Elite, where he won consecutive titles, two Finals MVP awards, and the 2023 league MVP. By the 2025–26 season, he had become one of the league's premier perimeter defenders, leading the NBA in steals and earning a spot on the All-Defensive First Team. He shares an identical twin bond with Amen Thompson, the fourth overall pick in the same draft.

Born Ausar XLNC Thompson on January 30, 2003, in San Leandro, California, he is the son of Maya Wilson and Troy Thompson, who is of Jamaican descent. His identical twin brother, Amen, was born one minute earlier; both share the middle name XLNC, pronounced excellence. He and Amen began training under their father at age seven and were homeschooled in sixth and seventh grades to devote more time to basketball. The family relocated to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, before eighth grade so the twins could start high school basketball early at Pine Crest School.

As a sophomore at Pine Crest, Ausar averaged 17.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists and earned second-team All-County honors. As a junior, he was named to the Broward County Fab Five and averaged 22.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 3.4 assists, helping the program win the Class 4A state championship. He shared Broward County Class 5A-1A co-Player of the Year with Amen. He was rated a five-star recruit by ESPN and Rivals and held scholarship offers from Alabama, Arizona, Auburn, Arizona State, and Kansas before deciding to bypass college basketball entirely.

On May 25, 2021, he signed a two-year deal with Overtime Elite, joining the league with Amen and skipping their final year of high school and any collegiate eligibility. In 2021–22, he played for Team Elite and averaged 14.7 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.2 blocks, leading his team to the OTE championship. He was named Finals MVP after recording 20 points and 11 rebounds in the decisive Game 3 win over Team OTE. In the 2022–23 season, he captained the City Reapers alongside Amen, earned multiple Player of the Week honors, and was named OTE MVP as the Reapers won another title.

The Detroit Pistons selected Thompson fifth overall in the 2023 NBA draft. In the 2025–26 season, he led the NBA in steals and was named to the All-Defensive First Team, cementing his reputation as one of the most disruptive perimeter defenders in the league. His rapid defensive development, combined with Overtime Elite experience, allowed him to contribute at a high level despite a nontraditional developmental path.

Thompson is a defensive catalyst with elite anticipation, lateral quickness, and hands.
