Cam Whitmore

Whitmore is an American forward with a strong frame, explosive athleticism, and a scoring-first mentality that made him a lottery-pick prospect before he slid to 20th overall in the 2023 draft. After a productive rookie season with Houston that included a double-double and a then-career-high 24 points, his playing time diminished in his second season due to roster health. He was traded to the Washington Wizards in 2025, where he appeared in 21 games before a season-ending deep vein thrombosis diagnosis in December 2025 sidelined him through January 2026.

Born Cameron Whitmore on July 8, 2004, in Severn, Maryland, he attended Archbishop Spalding High School. As a senior, he was the Capital Gazette boys basketball player of the year and was selected to the 2022 McDonald's All-American Boys Game. He played for Team USA at the 2022 FIBA Under-18 Americas Championship and was named tournament MVP. He was a consensus five-star recruit and one of the top players in the 2022 class. On October 7, 2021, he committed to Villanova over Illinois and North Carolina.

After missing seven games with a thumb injury, Whitmore made his collegiate debut against Oklahoma. As a freshman, he averaged 12.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 0.7 assists, was named Big East Freshman of the Year, and declared for the 2023 NBA draft, becoming Villanova's first true one-and-done since Tim Thomas in 1997. He was widely projected as a lottery pick, with some mock drafts placing him as high as fourth overall.

The Houston Rockets selected Whitmore with the 20th overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft. On October 26, 2023, he made his NBA debut in a loss to Orlando. He made his first start on January 21, 2024, against Boston. On January 26, he recorded his first career double-double and a then-career-high 24 points with 11 rebounds in a win over Charlotte. He led the NBA in points per touch and averaged 23.7 points per 36 minutes as a rookie. In his second season, his minutes decreased with Tari Eason returning from injury, and he spent time with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. On April 11, 2025, he scored a career-high 34 points against the Lakers.

On July 5, 2025, the Washington Wizards acquired Whitmore in a three-team trade involving the New Orleans Pelicans. On October 22, 2025, he made his Wizards debut, scoring 14 points with five rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench. In 21 appearances for Washington during the 2025-26 season, he averaged 9.2 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 0.7 assists. On December 23, he was diagnosed with upper-extremity deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder. On January 15, 2026, he was ruled out for the remainder of the season.

Whitmore is a powerfully built wing with elite vertical athleticism, a strong frame, and finishing ability around the rim. He scores on drives, dunks, and transition attacks, using his 6-foot-6, 235-pound body to overpower smaller defenders. His three-point shooting showed promise as a rookie but remains inconsistent. Defensively, his physical tools allow him to guard multiple positions, though his engagement and awareness are works in progress.
