Dariq Whitehead

Whitehead is a talented wing whose professional career has been slowed by injury, inconsistent opportunity, and the difficulty of translating elite prep scoring into NBA production. Drafted in the first round after a decorated high school career and one season at Duke, he has yet to establish himself as a reliable rotation player. His brief stint with Memphis in 2026, where he averaged 16.3 points in six games, offered a glimpse of his scoring potential, but his overall body of work remains limited by availability and role uncertainty. Born Dariq Miller-Whitehead on August 1, 2004, he attended Montverde Academy in Montverde, Florida. As a senior, he won the Naismith Prep Player of the Year Award and was named Mr. Basketball USA. He was selected to the 2022 McDonald's All-American Game and was named MVP after recording 13 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. He was a consensus five-star recruit and one of the top players in the 2022 class. On August 1, 2021, he committed to Duke over Florida State, Kansas, and the NBA G League.

At Duke, Whitehead played one season and made an immediate impact. He debuted on November 18, 2022, with 6 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals against Delaware. On December 10, he made his first start, scoring 15 points in a win over UMES, marking the first time in program history that Duke started five freshmen. On January 7, 2023, he scored a career-high 18 points with 6 field goals and 4 three-pointers in a 65-64 win over Boston College. On February 18, he tied his career high with 4 three-pointers, scoring 14 points with 3 assists and 2 steals against Syracuse. In the ACC Tournament, he scored 16 points against Miami in the semifinals and had 4 steals off the bench in the championship game win over Virginia, matching the most by any Duke player that season. In two NCAA tournament games, he averaged 10.5 points on 61.5 percent shooting and 62.5 percent from three with 3.0 rebounds.

The Brooklyn Nets selected Whitehead 22nd overall in the 2023 NBA draft, and he signed on July 10, 2023. Throughout his rookie and sophomore seasons, he received multiple assignments to the Long Island Nets of the G League. In the 2023-24 season, he appeared in 2 games for Brooklyn, averaging 1.5 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.5 assists. In the 2024-25 season, he appeared in 20 games and averaged 5.7 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 0.6 assists. On October 13, 2025, he and Drew Timme were waived by the Nets.

On October 17, 2025, Whitehead signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder but was waived the next day. On November 3, he joined the Oklahoma City Blue of the G League. On April 3, 2026, he signed a 10-day contract with the Memphis Grizzlies. On April 12, 2026, he scored a career-high 26 points in a 101-132 loss to the Houston Rockets. In six games with Memphis, he averaged 16.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.5 assists, providing a tantalizing preview of what he might become with consistent minutes.

Whitehead is a scoring wing with a smooth shooting stroke, good size for the position, and the ability to create his own shot.
