Adem Bona

Bona is a Nigerian and Turkish center who entered the NBA with the Philadelphia 76ers after a decorated two-year career at UCLA. He emerged as one of the top defensive big men in the Pac-12, earning conference Freshman of the Year and later Defensive Player of the Year honors. Drafted in the second round in 2024, he brings a background of international development, elite high school credentials, and shot-blocking productivity.

Born Ikechukwu Stanley Okoro on March 28, 2003, in Lagos, Nigeria, Bona is the youngest of five children. He initially played soccer as a midfielder before switching to basketball as his height became apparent. He practiced with makeshift hoops in open fields, sometimes without a proper ball, until a video of him reached Turkish coach Türkay Çakıroğlu. Çakıroğlu connected him with Nevzat Özdemir of Istanbul Basket, and at age 13, Bona relocated to Turkey to begin structured basketball development, leaving his family behind in Nigeria.

After rising through the Turkish youth system, Bona moved to the United States to attend Prolific Prep in Napa, California. There, he established himself as a consensus five-star prospect and earned McDonald's All-American honors. His physical tools, rebounding presence, and defensive instincts made him one of the most coveted big men in the 2022 recruiting class. He committed to UCLA and joined the Bruins for the 2022–23 season.

As a UCLA freshman, Bona made an immediate impact defensively. He was named to the Pac-12 All-Defensive Team and voted the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year in 2023. His sophomore campaign in 2023–24 elevated his standing further: he earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors and was voted the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year. His shot-blocking, rim protection, and interior presence anchored the Bruins defense and projected him as a legitimate NBA frontcourt prospect.

The Philadelphia 76ers selected Bona in the second round of the 2024 NBA draft. He joined a franchise with championship aspirations, offering depth as a defensive-minded center capable of altering shots and finishing around the rim. While his offensive game remains a work in progress, his energy, rebounding, and verticality fit the mold of a backup big who can spell starters and protect the paint in limited minutes.

On the court, Bona functions primarily as a rim protector and lob threat. His shot-blocking timing and vertical leap allow him to contest without fouling, and his frame lets him absorb contact in the post. Offensively, he scores on putbacks, dump-offs, and transition finishes, with occasional flashes of a developing face-up game. His movement skills for a player his size hint at switchability on defense, though his primary value lies in drop coverage and interior presence.

Bona enters the 2025–26 season as a second-year center for the Philadelphia 76ers.
