Toumani Camara

Camara is a Belgian forward who reached the NBA through the 2023 draft after a winding college path from Brussels to the American Southeast and Midwest. Drafted by the Phoenix Suns and traded to the Portland Trail Blazers, he brings defensive versatility, rebounding instincts, and international experience.

Born Toumani Camara on May 8, 2000, in Brussels, Belgium, his mother Anne Le Docte is of Belgian and Haitian origin, while his father is from Mali. He and his older brother were raised solely by their mother from age five. He has four butterflies tattooed on his right leg to pay tribute to his mother, brother, a sister who died from a lung ailment at three months old, and himself.

Camara first started playing basketball after being influenced by his brother. His first exposure to American basketball was the NCAA tournament broadcast on Belgian television. He became a fan of Dwyane Wade while watching him win a championship with Miami. He played for the Belgium national team in the 2016 FIBA U16 European Championship Division B. His Belgian coach helped him find a school in the United States, and Camara moved to Florida at age 16 to attend Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School.

At Chaminade-Madonna, Camara averaged a double-double in his junior and senior seasons and was recruited by more than 30 Division I schools. He committed to Georgia on October 1, 2018. As a freshman, he averaged 6.6 points and 4.3 rebounds and was teammates with future #1 pick Anthony Edwards. As a sophomore, he averaged 12.8 points and a team-best 7.7 rebounds. On April 1, 2021, he entered the transfer portal and committed to Dayton on April 8.

At Dayton, Camara averaged 10.9 points and 6.9 rebounds in 2021–22, earning All-Atlantic 10 third team honors. He declared for the 2022 NBA draft but withdrew after testing the process. As a senior, he averaged 13.9 points and 8.6 rebounds and was named to the All-Atlantic 10 first team and all-defensive team. He declared for the 2023 NBA draft and was selected by Phoenix, then traded to Portland.
