Cam Spencer

Spencer is an American guard who entered the NBA through a 2024 second-round selection and a draft-night trade from Detroit to Memphis. His path to the league wound through three collegiate programs, a significant hip injury, two transfers, and a national championship at UConn before he secured a two-way contract and later a standard deal with the Grizzlies. He has shown scoring potential at the G League level and contributed as a depth guard during his rookie season.

Born Cameron Spencer on April 6, 2000, in Davidsonville, Maryland, he attended Boys Latin School of Maryland in Baltimore. As a senior, he averaged 25 points, seven rebounds, and 4.5 assists and was named the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association Player of the Year.

Spencer began his college career at Loyola University Maryland. He averaged 10 points, 3.1 assists, and 3.4 rebounds in 23 games as a freshman before suffering a hip injury that cost him most of his sophomore season. He returned for the final five games and averaged 10.2 points. As a junior, he averaged 18.9 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 2.3 steals and was named first-team All-Patriot League. After the season, he entered the NCAA transfer portal.

He transferred to Rutgers and became a starting guard. He scored 14 points, including a go-ahead three-pointer with 13.3 seconds left, in a 65-64 upset over top-ranked Purdue. He hit another go-ahead three against Northwestern and was named Big Ten Player of the Week. He also scored 21 points with six rebounds, six assists, and four steals in a win over Ohio State. He averaged 13.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 2.0 steals. After the season, he utilized an extra COVID year of eligibility and entered the transfer portal for a second time.

Spencer transferred to UConn and started all 40 games. He averaged 14.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.5 steals, was named first-team All-Big East, and helped the Huskies win the 2024 national championship. He scored 11 points with eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals in the 75-60 championship game win over Purdue.

The Detroit Pistons selected Spencer 53rd overall in the 2024 NBA draft and traded him to the Memphis Grizzlies on draft night. He signed a two-way contract on July 8, 2024. On December 2, he scored 51 points, including 12 three-pointers, for the Memphis Hustle in the G League. On January 10, 2025, he suffered a fractured left thumb requiring surgery and was ruled out for at least three weeks. He made 25 appearances, including one start, for Memphis during the 2024-25 season, averaging 4.2 points, 1.2 rebounds, and 1.4 assists. On June 30, 2025, he re-signed with the Grizzlies.

Spencer is a scoring guard with deep range, clutch shot-making, and defensive activity. His go-ahead threes at Rutgers and his 51-point G League explosion demonstrate scoring potential at multiple levels. He moves well without the ball, operates in catch-and-shoot situations, and has shown flashes of playmaking.
