About Joel Embiid

Embiid is a Cameroonian-American center who has established himself as one of the most dominant players in the NBA since being drafted third overall in 2014. Despite early-career injuries that delayed his debut for two seasons, he has earned multiple MVP votes, scoring titles, and All-NBA honors while anchoring the Philadelphia 76ers.

Born Joel Hans Embiid on March 16, 1994, in Yaounde, Cameroon, he is the son of military officer Thomas Embiid and his wife Christine. He played volleyball and soccer as a child and originally planned to pursue professional volleyball in Europe. He started playing basketball at age 15, modeling his game after Hakeem Olajuwon. He was discovered at a basketball camp by fellow Yaounde native Luc Mbah a Moute, who became his mentor and helped him move to the United States at age 16.

Embiid attended Montverde Academy but transferred after one year due to limited playing time. He then attended The Rock School in Gainesville, Florida, where he averaged 13.0 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks and led the team to a 33-4 record and a state championship. He was a five-star recruit and committed to Kansas.

At Kansas, Embiid averaged 11.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks per game and was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and second-team All-Big 12. A stress fracture in his back in March 2014 sidelined him for the postseason. He declared for the 2014 NBA draft and underwent surgery on a broken navicular bone in his foot shortly before the draft. The 76ers selected him third overall.

Embiid missed his first two NBA seasons due to foot injuries. He debuted in 2016-17 and was named to the All-Rookie First Team despite playing only 31 games. He has since been selected to seven All-Star teams, five All-NBA teams, and three All-Defensive teams. He led the NBA in scoring in 2022 and 2023, becoming the first center since Shaquille O'Neal to do so, and won the MVP award in 2023. He also won a gold medal with the United States at the 2024 Olympics.

Embiid is a dominant post scorer with elite footwork, a soft touch around the rim, and a developing three-point stroke. He uses his size and strength to score in the paint, draws fouls at a high rate, and has expanded his offensive game to include face-up jumpers and perimeter shooting. His rim protection and defensive positioning make him one of the most impactful two-way big men in the league.

Embiid enters each season as an MVP-caliber center and the face of the 76ers franchise. His trajectory from a Cameroonian volleyball player to a Kansas standout, a delayed NBA debut, and a scoring champion reflects extraordinary talent, patience through injury, and a commitment to dominating at the highest level.
