Coby White's Hornets future came into focus quickly after the LaMelo Ball trade.
Charlotte reportedly agreed to a three-year, $74 million deal with White, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. The timing matters. Ball was moved to the Minnesota Timberwolves, and White now steps into a much clearer starting role in the Hornets' backcourt.
White had already made a strong case to stay.
After arriving from Chicago at the trade deadline, he averaged 15.6 points and 3.0 assists in 21 games with Charlotte. NBA.com noted that he played those games after spending the first six-plus seasons of his career with the Bulls. His career averages sit at 15.4 points and 3.9 assists.
The contract is not just a retention move. It is part of Charlotte's new roster map.
With Ball gone, the Hornets are no longer organizing everything around one high-usage lead guard. Brandon Miller and Kon Knueppel remain major pieces, Naz Reid arrives in the Ball deal, and White gives Charles Lee a scoring guard who can handle more responsibility without forcing a full rebuild.
That is the real clarity here. White was a priority before the trade, but the Ball move turned his role from useful sixth-man scorer into something closer to a starting backcourt anchor.
Charlotte still has work to do, but this deal shows where the first line has been drawn.
