The Hornets got a rare offseason nod for choosing the long view.
David Aldridge's 2026 NBA offseason rankings placed Charlotte third, behind only Miami and Philadelphia. The reasoning centered on a front office that did not treat last season's 25-win improvement as proof that the build was finished.
The Hornets moved LaMelo Ball and Green for Naz Reid and future picks, then turned Miles Bridges into another first-rounder while also adding value in smaller deals. Charlotte also took on Dorian Finney-Smith from Houston with three second-round picks attached, giving the roster more veteran salary that can be moved later.
Aldridge framed Ball as a talent teams read in different ways: brilliant, but not necessarily the lead player on a title-level roster. Charlotte's response was to shift the timeline toward Brandon Miller and Kon Knueppel while stacking draft capital between 2027 and 2031.
That does not make the Hornets good overnight. It does give Jeff Peterson's front office a cleaner direction than chasing a quick play-in bump. The roster now has young focal points, tradeable contracts and more future picks to shape the next serious version of the team.
