The Lakers want to keep Austin Reaves next to Luka Doncic, and the belief around the NBA is that they will find a way to do it.
Dan Woike of The Athletic reported that Los Angeles sees Reaves as a strong fit for the roster it wants to build around Doncic. He gives the team a secondary playmaker who can create his own shot, handle the ball and still contribute when playing off it.
There are obvious questions about pairing the two guards defensively. One Lakers source told Woike those concerns are overstated as long as the club adds the right help on the wing and at the rim. In that view, the answer is to strengthen the supporting cast rather than break up a productive backcourt.
Reaves also carries weight inside the locker room. He was considered one of the team's most important voices last season, and his leadership has grown from year to year.
The harder part is his next contract. Reaves has built his career around proving he was undervalued, and another team could offer more if the Lakers try to save money for other needs. Los Angeles may prefer a more team-friendly price, but pushing too hard creates the risk of losing a player it cannot easily replace.
"You can't let a talent like that walk," one Western Conference executive told Woike. "That would be a disaster."
That warning reflects the broader league view. Most rivals expect the Lakers to retain Reaves because losing him for nothing would leave no clear path to another player who fits beside Doncic as smoothly. Paying more than planned could create a problem later. Letting him leave would create one immediately, with no easy replacement available.
