Luka Doncic is not waiting for the Lakers' new power structure to settle in around him.
Marc Stein reported that Doncic opened a dialogue this week with Bob Iger and Josh Kushner, the team's new lead ownership duo, and plans to meet with them at the first opportunity. It is an early signal from the franchise player as Los Angeles moves into another ownership transition.
Doncic is spending the offseason in Slovenia to stay close to his two daughters, but he is also using the trip to pull the Lakers together. Stein noted that 16 teammates are scheduled to join him in Ljubljana starting Thursday. The one Lakers player not expected is newly drafted Cam Carr, who has league-mandated rookie orientation at the same time.
The ownership churn around Doncic is unusually heavy. Since November 2023, Stein noted that he has been tied to Mark Cuban and Patrick Dumont in Dallas, then Jeanie Buss, Mark Walter, Iger and Kushner with the Lakers.
That makes the outreach more than a courtesy call. Doncic is trying to build direct communication with the people now shaping the franchise's direction. For the Lakers, the first job is clear: make sure their star feels a stable plan forming around him.
