About Alex Caruso
Caruso is a defensive-minded NBA guard with two championship rings, consecutive All-Defensive honors, and a reputation as one of the most disruptive perimeter defenders in the league. After going undrafted out of Texas A&M, he ascended from the G League to a rotation role via two-way contracts before earning multi-year guaranteed deals. His career spans the Lakers, the Chicago Bulls, and the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Born on February 28, 1994, in College Station, Texas, Caruso attended A&M Consolidated High School. As a senior, he averaged 18 points and 9 rebounds, led his team to the postseason, and earned TABC All-Regional, All-State, TABC All-Star, and district MVP honors under head coaches Rusty Segler and Rick German.
Caruso played 137 games over four years at Texas A&M, averaging 8.0 points, 4.7 assists, and 2.02 steals. He graduated as the Aggies all-time leader in assists with 649 and steals with 276, surpassing David Edwards in both categories. As a senior, he guided Texas A&M to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament and earned second-team All-SEC and SEC All-Defensive Team recognition. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in sports management.
After going undrafted in 2016, Caruso joined the Philadelphia 76ers Summer League squad, then signed with the Oklahoma City Thunder in September but was waived in October. The Thunder assigned him to the Oklahoma City Blue of the D-League on November 3. He joined the Los Angeles Lakers Summer League team in 2017 and became the first player to move directly from the D-League to the NBA through a two-way contract. He helped the Lakers win the 2017 Summer League title in Las Vegas and made his NBA debut that October. In April 2019, he set a career-high of 32 points against the Clippers and recorded the only 30-point, 10-rebound, 5-assist game by a Laker other than LeBron James that season.
Caruso signed a two-year, .5 million contract with the Lakers in July 2019 and won his first NBA championship in the 2020 Finals, starting the clinching game against the Miami Heat. He became an unrestricted free agent after the 2020โ21 season and signed a four-year, million deal with the Chicago Bulls in August 2021. In Chicago, he built a reputation as an elite defensive guard, earning All-Defensive First Team honors in 2023 and Second Team in 2024. He signed with the Oklahoma City Thunder as a free agent before the 2025โ26 season and won his second NBA title in 2025.
On the court, Caruso is a defensive catalyst. He anticipates passing lanes, applies full-court pressure, and generates steals at a rate that belies his pedestrian scoring numbers. Offensively, he contributes as a cutter, transition finisher, and occasional playmaker, but his value derives overwhelmingly from defensive disruption, communication, and energy. Coaches deploy him against opposing primary ball-handlers, and his screen-navigation and help-defense instincts make him a fixture in closing lineups.
Caruso enters the 2025โ26 season as a two-time champion, a two-time All-Defensive selection, and the Oklahoma City Thunder's veteran defensive presence. His path from undrafted free agent to defensive cornerstone through two-way contracts and limited guaranteed money remains one of the most improbable rises among active NBA rotation players.
