Markelle Fultz

Fultz is an American guard who entered the NBA with enormous expectations as the first overall pick in 2017 but faced an unorthodox early career due to a shoulder injury that impacted his shooting mechanics. After time in Philadelphia and Orlando, he has worked to re-establish himself as a capable NBA rotation player with playmaking and defensive skills.

Born Markelle N'Gai Fultz on May 29, 1998, in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, he was initially cut from the varsity team as a sophomore at DeMatha Catholic High School due to his awkward gait and long limbs. Assistant coach Raphael Chillious of Washington was the first to recognize his potential, and by his junior season, Fultz had grown to 6 feet 3 inches and averaged 16.8 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 4.3 assists. He was named Player of the Year in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference.

Fultz committed to Washington and played one season for the Huskies. Despite the team's struggles, he averaged 23.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 5.9 assists and was named a third-team All-American and first-team All-Pac-12. He declared for the 2017 NBA draft and was selected first overall by the Philadelphia 76ers.

In Philadelphia, Fultz's rookie season was derailed by a shoulder injury that affected his shooting form. He was traded to the Orlando Magic in 2019, where he found more stability and showed flashes of his playmaking ability. He signed with the Sacramento Kings in 2025 after several seasons in Orlando.

Fultz is a pass-first guard with a 6-foot-4 frame and a 7-foot wingspan that helps him defensively. His playmaking vision and ability to get downhill remain his strengths, while his shooting has been a persistent challenge since his shoulder injury. He functions best as a secondary ball-handler who pushes the pace, creates for others, and defends multiple perimeter positions.
