Mo Bamba

Bamba is an Ivorian-American center who entered the NBA with enormous physical tools and defensive potential as the sixth overall pick in 2018. Known for his record-breaking wingspan and shot-blocking ability, he has spent time with multiple franchises while working to translate his length and athleticism into consistent production at both ends of the floor.

Born Mohamed Fakaba Bamba on May 12, 1998, in Harlem, New York, he is the son of Lancine Bamba and Aminata Johnson, both immigrants from Ivory Coast. His older brother, Sidiki Johnson, played college basketball at Arizona, Providence, and Wabash Valley. Bamba first became interested in basketball at age six, inspired by the game's popularity in his hometown.

Bamba attended Cardigan Mountain School in New Hampshire and then Westtown School in Pennsylvania. As a junior, he averaged 14 points, 11 rebounds, and six blocks per game. He was rated as a five-star recruit and ranked among the top prospects in the 2017 class. His final four schools were Kentucky, Duke, Texas, and Michigan, and he ultimately chose Texas.

At Texas, Bamba made his debut on November 10, 2017, with 15 points and eight rebounds. On December 30, he recorded a season-high 22 points, 15 rebounds, and eight blocks in a loss to Kansas. He averaged 12.9 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 3.7 blocks per game and was named to the Big 12 All-Newcomer Team, All-Defensive Team, and All-Big 12 Second Team. After Texas lost to Nevada in the NCAA tournament, he declared for the 2018 NBA draft.

The Orlando Magic selected Bamba with the sixth overall pick in 2018. He spent four and a half seasons in Orlando, showing flashes of rim protection and three-point shooting but struggling with consistency and minutes. He was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2023 and later played for the Philadelphia 76ers and Utah Jazz.

Bamba is a physical marvel with a 7-foot-10 wingspan and elite standing reach. His length makes him a formidable shot blocker and alters shots without jumping. He has shown developing three-point range but is most valuable as a rim protector and lob threat. His development focus centers on physicality, rebounding consistency, and offensive refinement.
