Luka Doncic

Dončić is a Slovenian guard widely regarded as one of the greatest European players in basketball history. Since entering the NBA as the third overall pick in 2018, he has earned six All-Star selections, six All-NBA First Team nods, and the 2019 Rookie of the Year award. His combination of scoring, playmaking, and clutch performance has made him the face of the Dallas Mavericks franchise and one of the most recognizable players in the league.

Born on February 28, 1999, in Ljubljana, Slovenia, Dončić is the son of Mirjam Poterbin, a beauty salon owner, and Saša Dončić, a basketball coach and former player. His mother is Slovenian, and his father is a Slovenian of Serbian descent from Kosovo. His parents divorced in 2008, and custody was granted to his mother. Dončić first touched a basketball at seven months old and began organized play at age seven, often competing against older children. He admired Greek player Vassilis Spanoulis and wore number 7 at Real Madrid in his honor.

Dončić was a youth player for Union Olimpija before joining Real Madrid's academy. In 2015, he made his senior debut at age 16, becoming the youngest in club history. He led Real Madrid to the 2018 EuroLeague title, winning both EuroLeague MVP and Final Four MVP. He was also named ACB Most Valuable Player and won back-to-back EuroLeague Rising Star and ACB Best Young Player awards. He was selected to the EuroLeague 2010-20 All-Decade Team.

The Atlanta Hawks selected Dončić third overall in the 2018 NBA draft and traded him to the Dallas Mavericks. He won Rookie of the Year unanimously and made the All-Rookie First Team. In 2024, he became the first European to lead the NBA in scoring and the second international player to achieve the feat. That same season, he led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals. He is the franchise leader in career triple-doubles and holds the record for most points in a Mavericks season.

Dončić is a generational offensive talent with elite court vision, step-back shooting, and passing creativity. He operates as a primary ball-handler in pick-and-roll situations, drawing double teams and finding open shooters with precision. His size at the guard position allows him to post up smaller defenders and finish through contact. Defensively, he has improved his positioning and effort, though offense remains his signature strength.
