Born on August 26, 2001, in Charlotte, North Carolina, Williams attended West Charlotte High School before transferring to Northside Christian Academy. He was rated a consensus five-star recruit and a McDonald's All-American. He committed to Florida State.

At Florida State, Williams averaged 9.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.0 assists as a freshman. He was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team and earned All-ACC honorable mention. He declared for the 2020 NBA draft after one season.
