Cam Thomas

Thomas is one of the most prolific young scorers in the NBA, entering the league as a first-round pick in 2021 and immediately establishing himself as a microwave offensive threat with the ability to erupt for massive scoring totals. Drafted 27th overall by Brooklyn, he won Summer League MVP, became the youngest player ever to score 40 points in three consecutive games, and has averaged over 20 points per game in multiple seasons. His path from Yokosuka, Japan, to Oak Hill Academy, to LSU, and into the NBA lottery reflects a career built entirely on elite shot-making and scoring instincts.

Born Cameron Bouchea Thomas on October 13, 2001, in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, while his mother was living there, he moved to the United States and attended Oscar F. Smith High School in Chesapeake, Virginia, as a freshman. He sat out his sophomore season due to disagreements with the coaching staff. For his junior year, he transferred to Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia, where he joined Cole Anthony and Kofi Cockburn on one of the most touted teams in the country. He averaged a team-high 26.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3.4 assists, led Oak Hill to a 31-5 record, and was named Offensive Player of the Year at the Nike EYBL after averaging a league-best 29.5 points for Boo Williams. As a senior, he averaged 31.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 3.4 assists, posted 30-plus points in nine games including two 40-point performances, led Oak Hill to the Tournament of Champions title, and was named MVP. He was selected to the Jordan Brand Classic.

On November 18, 2019, Thomas committed to LSU over UCLA. In his college debut on November 26, 2020, he scored 27 points in a 94-81 win over SIU Edwardsville. He led all freshmen in scoring at 23.0 points per game, also averaging 3.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists, and was named to the First Team All-SEC. He declared for the 2021 NBA draft on April 15, 2021, forgoing his remaining eligibility.

The Brooklyn Nets selected Thomas with the 27th overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft. He won NBA Summer League MVP, averaging 27 points and leading the league in scoring, and was named to the Summer League First Team. He signed with Brooklyn on August 5, 2021, and made his NBA debut on October 19, scoring two points against Milwaukee. On November 20, while on assignment with the Long Island Nets, he scored 46 points in a 114-110 win over the Raptors 905. He was named to the All-NBA Summer League First Team in 2022. On December 10, 2022, he scored a then-career-high 33 points against Indiana. On February 4, 2023, he scored a then-career-high 44 points against Washington, and the next game he became the youngest player in NBA history to score 40 or more points in three consecutive games.

Thomas is a scoring guard with an elite ability to create his own shot, get downhill, and finish through contact. His arsenal includes step-back jumpers, floaters, crossovers, and a quick release that allows him to score over defenders. His three-point range is deep, and he operates comfortably off the dribble or in isolation.
