His path included a historic stint in the Australian NBL before he became one of the most unique young players in the league.

Born Joshua James Giddey on October 10, 2002, in Melbourne, Victoria, he is the son of professional basketball players Kim and Warrick Giddey. He attended St Kevin's College and the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra. In April 2019, he averaged 20.0 points, 8.3 rebounds, and six assists at the Australian Under-18 Championships, leading VIC Metro to the title.

On March 12, 2020, Giddey signed with the Adelaide 36ers of the NBL as part of the Next Stars program, becoming the first Australian in the program. He recorded the youngest triple-double in NBL history on April 26, 2021, and the first Australian to record consecutive triple-doubles. He was named NBL Rookie of the Year after averaging 10.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, and a league-leading 7.6 assists.

The Oklahoma City Thunder selected Giddey with the sixth overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft. He signed on August 8, 2021, and made his NBA debut on October 20. At 19 years and 84 days old, he became the youngest player in NBA history to record a triple-double.
