Cade Cunningham

Cunningham is an American guard who has become the face of the Detroit Pistons franchise since being selected first overall in the 2021 NBA draft. A consensus first-team All-American and Big 12 Player of the Year after a single season at Oklahoma State, he entered the NBA with a polished offensive game, a 6 ft 7 in frame for a point guard, and a reputation as a leader. Born Cade Parker Cunningham on September 25, 2001, in Arlington, Texas, to Carrie and Keith Cunningham, he grew up playing football as a quarterback, which he credits for improving his passing and leadership on the basketball court. He focused on basketball after watching his older brother play in college and frequently played with his father and brother at a recreation center. He played for Barnett Junior High School and the Texas Titans on the AAU circuit alongside future TCU player Mike Miles Jr.

Cunningham attended Bowie High School in Arlington, where he became a varsity starter as a freshman and averaged 15.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 3.0 assists. He was named District 4-6A Newcomer of the Year. As a sophomore, he averaged 18.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 5.3 assists and was named District 4-6A co-MVP and earned Texas Association of Basketball Coaches All-Region honors, though he suffered a dunking injury in December 2017. Entering his junior year, he transferred to Montverde Academy in Florida, whose team was ranked number one in the country by USA Today. On February 2, 2019, he recorded 26 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds in a 76-51 win over Oak Hill Academy. He averaged 11.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 5.5 assists as a junior and was named Nike EYBL MVP after averaging 25.1 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 5.2 assists for the Texas Titans. He led Montverde to one of the best high school seasons in history as a senior and received national player of the year recognition.

He committed to Oklahoma State and played one season under coach Mike Boynton. Cunningham averaged 20.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists, was named a consensus first-team All-American, and earned Big 12 Player of the Year honors. He also won a gold medal with the United States at the 2019 FIBA Under-19 World Cup. After his freshman season, he declared for the 2021 NBA draft, where the Detroit Pistons selected him with the first overall pick.

As a rookie with Detroit, Cunningham averaged 17.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.6 assists and was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. He displayed a mature game, operating as the primary offensive hub and showing flashes of elite shot creation. He battled injuries during his second season but returned stronger, steadily improving his scoring, playmaking, and defensive engagement.
