About Ajay Mitchell

Mitchell is a Belgian guard who entered the NBA through a draft-night trade from the New York Knicks to the Oklahoma City Thunder. He played two seasons with the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos before turning pro and has represented Belgium at both junior and senior levels. His rookie season in Oklahoma City resulted in an NBA championship, making him the second Belgian player to win a title.

Born on June 25, 2002, in Ans, Belgium, Mitchell moved to France briefly at age 17, playing thirteen games with the under-18 team of Nanterre 92 alongside Victor Wembanyama. He returned to Belgium and joined the youth setup at Limburg United, making two senior appearances in the Pro Basketball League during the 2019–20 season. He transitioned to full senior duty in 2020–21 while retaining his amateur status, then committed to UC Santa Barbara.

Mitchell appeared in 27 games as a freshman at UC Santa Barbara and earned Big West Conference Freshman of the Year honors, averaging 11.6 points, 3.7 assists, and 2.2 rebounds. As a sophomore, he raised those numbers to 16.3 points, 5.1 assists, and 2.7 rebounds and was named Big West Player of the Year. After two seasons, he declared for the 2024 NBA draft and was taken 38th overall by the New York Knicks.

The Knicks traded Mitchell to the Oklahoma City Thunder immediately on draft night in exchange for the 40th overall pick and cash. He signed a two-way contract on July 6, 2024, and later converted it to a standard two-year deal on February 6, 2025. On October 23, 2024, he posted a career-high 26 points against the Indiana Pacers. He missed ten to twelve weeks starting in January 2025 after turf toe surgery on his right foot. He returned to help the Thunder win the 2025 NBA Finals and became the second Belgian NBA champion, after D. J. Mbenga. On June 30, 2025, he re-signed with Oklahoma City on a three-year, nine-million-dollar contract.

Mitchell is a skilled combo guard with strong playmaking instincts and mid-range scoring ability. His assist numbers at UC Santa Barbara reflected his vision and unselfishness in the pick-and-roll. He scores efficiently in transition and uses craft to finish around the rim. His shooting improved from freshman to sophomore year, and he has shown the ability to operate as either a primary initiator or an off-guard. Defensively, he applies pressure with active hands and positional awareness, though he continues to add strength to handle NBA physicality.

Mitchell enters the 2025–26 NBA season as a Belgian national team player under contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder. His résumé includes Big West Player of the Year honors, a Belgian senior team debut at age 18, an NBA title in his rookie season, and a multi-year extension secured less than two months after the championship.
