Tre Johnson

Johnson is an American guard who reached the NBA as a top-six pick in the 2025 draft after a decorated freshman season at Texas. A consensus five-star recruit and Texas Mr. Basketball, he brought elite scoring ability and deep range to the Washington Wizards.

Born Richard Earl Johnson III on March 7, 2006, in Dallas, Texas, he attended Lake Highlands High School. As a sophomore, he averaged 23.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists. During his junior year, he led Lake Highlands to their first state championship since 1968 and scored 29 points in the title game against Beaumont United. He was named Texas Mr. Basketball, averaging 21.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.7 assists. He transferred to Link Academy in Missouri for his senior year, averaging 15.5 points and shooting nearly 40 percent from three and 90.5 percent from the free throw line. He was selected to the 2024 McDonald's All-American Boys Game.

Johnson was a consensus five-star recruit and was ranked the top overall recruit by major services before being surpassed by Dylan Harper. He committed to Texas on November 15, 2023, over Baylor. At the beginning of the season, he was named to the Jerry West Award and Naismith Player of the Year watch lists. In his debut against Ohio State, he had 29 points, five rebounds, four assists, two steals, and one block. On February 26, 2025, he broke Kevin Durant's freshman single-game program record by scoring 39 points against Arkansas. He averaged 19.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.7 assists and was named SEC Freshman of the Year.

The Washington Wizards selected Johnson sixth overall in the 2025 NBA draft. He made his professional debut on October 23, 2025, against Milwaukee, scoring 16 points including 4-of-8 from three-point range, the franchise's highest-scoring debut by a rookie since 1992.

Johnson functions as an elite scoring guard with deep range, smooth shooting mechanics, and the confidence to take over games as a freshman.
