Chucky Hepburn

Hepburn is a defensive-minded point guard known for clutch shot-making, perimeter pressure, and playmaking. He rose to prominence at Wisconsin, where he hit a famous game-winning three-pointer against Purdue as a freshman, and refined his game at Louisville, where he was named ACC Defensive Player of the Year. His professional career began with a two-way contract in Toronto, though a knee injury interrupted his first season. Born Gabriel Malik Hepburn on February 9, 2003, in Omaha, Nebraska, he attended Bellevue West High School. As a sophomore, he averaged 18.3 points, five assists, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.4 steals. He won the 2020 Nebraska Mr. Basketball Gatorade Player of the Year. As a junior, he led Bellevue West to a Class A state title while averaging 17.1 points, 6.5 assists, 4.6 rebounds, and 3.1 steals. As a senior, he averaged 15.9 points, 8.3 assists, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.8 steals and helped the team reach the Class A state title game. He committed to Wisconsin over Nebraska, Creighton, Minnesota, Loyola Chicago, and Valparaiso.

At Wisconsin, Hepburn became the first true freshman to start the season opener since Devin Harris in 2001. He scored 13 points in his debut against St. Francis and later banked in a game-winning three-pointer against eighth-ranked Purdue with 1.5 seconds left, clinching a share of the Big Ten regular-season title. The shot spawned NIL merchandise branded The Chucky Special. He was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. As a sophomore, he started all 35 games and led the Badgers in scoring at 12.2 points per game, three-point percentage at .405, assists at 2.8 per game, and steals at 1.5 per game. Wisconsin missed the NCAA tournament, but Hepburn scored a career-high 27 points in an NIT second-round win over Liberty and was named All-Big Ten honorable mention.

As a junior at Wisconsin, Hepburn shifted toward facilitation and defense with the addition of scorers AJ Storr and John Blackwell. He posted the best assist-to-turnover ratio of his career and increased his steal rate. He was named All-Big Ten honorable mention by the coaches and selected to the All-Defensive Team. On April 25, 2024, he announced his transfer to Louisville for his senior season. At Louisville, he thrived in the ACC, averaging 16.4 points, 5.8 assists, and 2.4 steals. He scored a career-high 37 points against Pittsburgh on March 1, 2025, was named ACC Player of the Week twice, and was named ACC Defensive Player of the Year.

Hepburn went undrafted in the 2025 NBA draft but signed a two-way contract with the Toronto Raptors on July 1, 2025. As a rookie professional, his role with Toronto involves developing as a backup point guard, applying his defensive tenacity at the NBA level, and showing he can run an offense efficiently. On January 8, 2026, he was ruled out for at least six weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. The injury halted his momentum during his first professional season and pushed his development timeline back. Upon recovery, his focus will be on proving he can defend NBA-caliber guards, make open shots, and manage possessions without turning the ball over.
