About Jusuf Nurkic
Nurkić is a Bosnian center whose NBA career has spanned multiple franchises since he was drafted 16th overall in 2014. Known for his size, rebounding, and playmaking vision, he has played for the Denver Nuggets, Portland Trail Blazers, Phoenix Suns, Charlotte Hornets, and Utah Jazz while representing Bosnia and Herzegovina on the international stage.
Born Jusuf Nurkić on August 23, 1994, in Živinice, Bosnia and Herzegovina, he began playing basketball at age 14 after Bosnian sports agent Enes Trnovčević gave him an opportunity to play in Slovenia. He played in the youth categories for Zlatorog Laško and was briefly loaned to Union Olimpija before signing with Cedevita Zagreb in October 2012. He had a breakthrough second season under coach Jasmin Repeša, averaging 11.6 points and 5.6 rebounds in the Adriatic League.
The Chicago Bulls selected Nurkić with the 16th overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft and traded him to the Denver Nuggets. He signed his rookie scale contract on July 31, 2014, and made his NBA debut on October 29, recording five points and seven rebounds. He had his first career double-double on January 1, 2015, and was named a participant in the Rising Stars Challenge.
Nurkić spent two and a half seasons in Denver before being traded to Portland in February 2017. He had a career resurgence with the Trail Blazers, averaging double-doubles and helping them reach the playoffs. He later signed with Phoenix, Charlotte, and Utah. He has been a member of the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team since his youth.
Nurkić is a skilled center with elite size, soft hands, and playmaking vision unusual for his position. He scores on post-ups, pick-and-rolls, and short rolls, and he uses his size to set screens, rebound at a high rate, and find open cutters. His offensive game includes face-up jumpers and occasional three-pointers, and his passing ability makes him a valuable facilitator from the elbows.
Nurkić enters each season as a veteran center with more than a decade of NBA experience and international pedigree. His trajectory from a Bosnian teenager who had never played basketball to a Croatian professional, a first-round draft pick, and a multi-franchise NBA contributor reflects rapid development, size, and a commitment to expanding his offensive skill set at every level.
