Stephen Curry's Warriors future still points toward Golden State, but the next step is a major one.
ESPN's Shams Charania reported that Curry and the Warriors have mutual interest in getting a contract extension done this summer. Charania said he expects talks to happen and added that Golden State is prepared to make the offer if Curry wants to move forward.
"I've not sensed any feel that he wants to leave Golden State," Charania said. "But this is a team right now that's at a crossroads. They're somewhat stagnant."
Curry becomes eligible on Aug. 29 to sign a two-year extension worth up to $136.7 million. His current contract runs through next season, so this is not an urgent free-agency standoff. It is more of a commitment check between the franchise player and a front office still trying to find a clean path back into contention.
The money is huge, even by modern NBA standards. The basketball question is whether the Warriors can attach that commitment to a roster plan Curry believes in. Charania's framing was not about a star pushing to leave. It was about a star who appears willing to stay, while still needing Golden State to show it can build something serious around him.
