About Charles Bassey
Bassey is a Nigerian center who entered the NBA as a second-round pick in 2021 after a dominant freshman season at Western Kentucky and a circuitous path from Lagos roadside poverty to American prep school stardom. Drafted by Philadelphia and later moving to Golden State, he has developed into a defensive-minded big man with shot-blocking instincts and rebounding production, though his professional career has been marked by incremental minutes and the challenge of translating collegiate dominance to NBA rotation value.
Born Charles Akemini Bassey on October 28, 2000, in Lagos, Nigeria, he played soccer until age 12 and stood 6 feet 1 inch at the time. A youth basketball coach discovered him while he was selling fried chicken on the side of a road and wearing flip-flops that were too small for him. He stopped playing soccer and focused on basketball. At age 14, he was named MVP of basketball camp Giants of Africa, a program established by Toronto Raptors executive Masai Ujiri.
At age 14, Bassey stood 6 feet 10 inches and moved to the United States to attend St. Anthony Catholic High School in San Antonio, Texas. As a freshman, he averaged 20.2 points, 17.1 rebounds, and 5.9 blocks per game, leading the team to the TAPPS title game. He was named MVP of the Jordan Brand Classic International Game. Before his sophomore season, he was ruled ineligible by TAPPS, and St. Anthony filed an appeal. The school withdrew from TAPPS and joined the Texas Christian Athletic League, allowing Bassey to regain eligibility. For his junior year, he transferred to DeSales High School in Louisville, Kentucky, and played for Aspire Basketball Academy. As a junior, he averaged 19.4 points and 12.8 rebounds.
Bassey was a consensus five-star recruit and one of the top centers in the 2018 class. On June 13, 2018, he reclassified to the 2018 class and committed to Western Kentucky. As a freshman, he averaged 14.6 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game, earning First Team All-Conference USA, Defensive Player of the Year, and Freshman of the Year honors. He recorded the most rebounds, blocks, and double-doubles by a freshman in program history. His sophomore season was cut short by a tibial plateau fracture against Arkansas that required surgery. Through 10 games, he averaged 15.3 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks.
The Philadelphia 76ers selected Bassey with the 53rd overall pick in the second round of the 2021 NBA draft. He signed with the 76ers and spent his early professional seasons developing as a backup center, providing energy, rim protection, and rebounding in limited minutes. He later signed with the Golden State Warriors, where he continued his role as a depth big man.
Bassey is a defensive-minded center with elite shot-blocking timing, rebounding instincts, and a developing offensive game around the rim. His college numbers reflected a player capable of anchoring a defense and cleaning the glass at a high level. Offensively, he scores primarily on putbacks, lobs, and dump-offs, relying on his size and athleticism rather than polished post moves. His free-throw shooting and face-up game remain works in progress. Defensively, his rim protection and rebounding are his primary values, and his mobility for a big man allows him to hedge and recover in pick-and-roll coverage. His injury history and raw offensive skill set have limited his NBA role, but his energy and defensive presence make him a situational option as a backup center.
Bassey enters the 2025-26 season with the Golden State Warriors. His résumé includes a childhood selling fried chicken in Lagos, a Giants of Africa MVP, a move to Texas at age 14, a TAPPS eligibility battle, a Jordan Brand Classic International MVP, a five-star recruiting pedigree, Western Kentucky Freshman of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, a tibial plateau fracture, a 53rd overall draft selection, Philadelphia tenure, and a move to Golden State. His path from a roadside in Lagos through San Antonio, Louisville, Bowling Green, and into the NBA reflects one of the most improbable journeys among active international big men, built on defensive instincts, physical tools, and the persistence to overcome bureaucratic and injury obstacles.
