Born Dalen Lee Terry on July 12, 2002, in Phoenix, Arizona, he attended Corona del Sol High School in Tempe alongside Alex Barcello and Saben Lee. He then transferred to Hillcrest Prep in Phoenix, where he averaged 15.8 points, 7.4 rebounds, 10.3 assists, 3.7 steals, and 1.9 blocks over two seasons. His all-around numbers reflected a guard who impacted the game in multiple ways. He played AAU basketball for the Compton Magic, sharing the court with future Pac-12 standouts Johnny Juzang, Isaiah Mobley, Evan Mobley, and Onyeka Okongwu.

Terry was a consensus four-star recruit ranked No. 46 overall by 247Sports. On July 23, 2019, he committed to Arizona, the first 2020 class commit for the program.
