Ryan Kalkbrenner

Kalkbrenner is an American center who reached the NBA through the 2025 draft after a decorated five-year career at Creighton. Drafted 34th overall by the Charlotte Hornets, he arrived with a résumé built on shot-blocking productivity, defensive accolades, and one of the most efficient scoring seasons in Bluejays history.

Born Ryan Thomas Kalkbrenner on January 17, 2002, he played for Trinity Catholic High School in St. Louis, Missouri. As a junior, he averaged 13.9 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 3.9 blocks per game, earning AAA Player of the Year and Class 3 All-State honors. He was named Nike Elite Youth Basketball League Defensive Player of the Year in 2019. As a senior, he averaged 16.3 points, 11 rebounds, and 5.7 blocks, repeating as a Class 3 All-State selection. He committed to Creighton over Stanford, Purdue, and Kansas.

Kalkbrenner came off the bench as a Creighton freshman, averaging 5.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks while leading all Big East freshmen in blocks. As a sophomore, he averaged 13.1 points and 7.7 rebounds, scored a career-high 22 points and 15 rebounds against Georgetown, and earned Honorable Mention All-Big East and Big East Defensive Player of the Year. He suffered a knee injury in the 2022 NCAA tournament that ended his season.

He scored a career-high 31 points in a first-round NCAA tournament win over NC State in 2023. In 2024–25, he was named Big East Preseason Player of the Year, then scored a career-high 49 points against UT Rio Grande Valley and set a Bluejays record with 20 made field goals. He averaged 19.2 points and 8.7 rebounds that season, winning the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award, the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Award, and Third Team All-American honors.

The Charlotte Hornets selected Kalkbrenner 34th overall in the 2025 NBA draft. In his regular season debut on October 22, 2025, he recorded 10 points and 11 rebounds in a win over Brooklyn, joining Emeka Okafor as the only players in Hornets franchise history to post a double-double in an NBA debut.

Kalkbrenner represented the United States at the 2021 FIBA Under-19 World Cup in Latvia, averaging 5.9 points, four rebounds, and 1.3 blocks as the team won gold. He married Creighton women's basketball alumna Rachael Saunders in August 2024.

Kalkbrenner functions as a traditional drop-coverage center with elite shot-blocking timing, soft touch around the rim, and the size to rebound in traffic. His college improvement curve, from bench freshman to national Defensive Player of the Year, reflects steady development. In the NBA, his role centers on rim protection, pick-and-roll finishing, and anchoring the interior defensively.
