Brooks Barnhizer

Barnhizer is an American wing who reached the NBA through a second-round selection in the 2025 draft after a four-year career at Northwestern. Drafted 44th overall by Oklahoma City, he arrived in the league with a decorated collegiate résumé that included Big Ten All-Defensive Team honors, third-team All-Big Ten recognition, and a milestone statistical threshold shared only with Michael Redd among conference players. His path to the league wound through multiple high schools, incremental improvement at Northwestern, and a senior season shortened by a foot injury.

Born on March 2, 2002, Barnhizer grew up in Elkhart, Indiana, before moving to Irvington, Alabama, in 2015. He began playing varsity basketball at Alma Bryant High School in the eighth grade, where his father was the head coach. After his sophomore year, his family moved to Lafayette, Indiana, and he transferred to Jefferson High School. As a junior, he averaged 20.7 points per game. As a senior, he averaged a state-high 32.7 points, 11.5 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 3.8 steals, and 2.6 blocks. He was rated a three-star recruit and committed to Northwestern over Butler, Xavier, and Western Kentucky.

At Northwestern, Barnhizer played in 11 games and averaged 1.7 points as a freshman. As a sophomore, he appeared in all 34 games as the team's sixth man, averaging 7.6 points and 4.9 rebounds. As a junior, he moved into the starting lineup, started all 34 games, averaged 14.6 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.8 steals, and 0.8 blocks, recorded 10 double-doubles—the most in a single season by a Northwestern guard—and was named third-team All-Big Ten and Big Ten All-Defensive Team. He also scored the tying layup to force overtime in Northwestern's first-round NCAA tournament win over Florida Atlantic.

As a senior, he was selected to the preseason All-Big Ten team by media and, through 17 games, averaged 17.1 points, 8.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 2.3 steals, and 1.1 blocks. He recorded nine double-doubles, including a streak of seven consecutive games, a program record. In January 2025, he aggravated a lingering foot injury and missed the remainder of the season. Despite the shortened campaign, he earned honorable mention All-Big Ten and was named Northwestern's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree. He finished with 1,067 points, career averages of 11.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.2 assists over 96 games, and became the first Big Ten player since Michael Redd to reach at least 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, and 200 assists within his first 96 career games, with 133 steals and 62 blocks.

The Oklahoma City Thunder selected Barnhizer with the 44th overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft. He signed a two-way contract with the Thunder and their G League affiliate, the Oklahoma City Blue, allowing him to split time between developmental minutes and the parent roster. He joined a young Thunder team known for identifying overlooked college producers and developing them into rotation players.
