Jimmy Butler III

Butler is an American forward who has developed into one of the most competitive and decorated players in the NBA since being drafted 30th overall in 2011. He has played for the Chicago Bulls, Minnesota Timberwolves, Philadelphia 76ers, Miami Heat, and Golden State Warriors, earning All-Star selections, All-NBA honors, and a reputation as one of the league's premier two-way players.

Born on September 14, 1989, in Houston, Texas, Butler lived with his mother in Tomball until she kicked him out at age 13. He moved between the homes of various friends before settling with the family of Jordan Leslie, a freshman at Tomball High School who had challenged him to a three-point contest. As a senior, he averaged 19.9 points and 8.7 rebounds and was voted his team's most valuable player.

Butler was not recruited out of high school and attended Tyler Junior College in Texas. He averaged 18.1 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 3.1 assists as a freshman and received Division I interest. Considered a two-star recruit and ranked 127th among junior college prospects, he accepted a scholarship to Marquette. As a sophomore, he averaged 5.6 points and 3.9 rebounds. He moved into the starting lineup as a junior and averaged 14.7 points and 6.4 rebounds, earning All-Big East Honorable Mention.

The Chicago Bulls selected Butler with the 30th overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft. He was named the NBA Most Improved Player in 2015 and spent six seasons in Chicago before being traded to Minnesota in June 2017. He was traded again to Philadelphia in November 2018. In July 2019, he signed with the Miami Heat and led them to the NBA Finals in his first season. He led the league in steals in 2021 and returned to the Finals with Miami in 2023. Amidst conflicts with the Heat front office, he was traded to the Golden State Warriors in 2025.

Butler is a physical, score-first forward with elite defensive intensity, a strong mid-range game, and a willingness to take over in postseason settings. He uses his strength to finish through contact, draws fouls at a high rate, and guards the opponent's best perimeter scorer. His playmaking and leadership have made him the centerpiece of multiple playoff runs.
